Though I painted this about a year ago, I always knew I needed to make corrections and so today I did. Placing these intimate cow and calf into a more intimate setting brought the painting together with more understanding.
These are western Hereford cattle - sturdy, hardy, dumb and produce good meat. We had Hereford and Black Angus on the ranch in Montana and I really love the Hereford mothers. We brought many heifers through their first birth - some too dumb to understand, but for the most part they were good, protective mothers. I never knew what they were saying other than "food", but they sure can communicate with each other.
